Okocat Litter Review

What is the history of Okocat litter?

Öko means eco or ecological in German, and this brand’s name represents its mission. Ecologically conscious principles and practices are the foundation of every Okocat product.

The brand’s parent company has been in business for over 25 years and has headquarters in the Pacific Northwest. Healthy Pet is part of the J. Rettenmaier & Söhne Group (JRS), a world leader in natural fiber processing. This gives the company access to over 100 years of experience in the natural fiber processing industry.

In Germany, Healthy Pet is best known for Cat’s Best – the European equivalent of Okocat. Cat’s Best has been Europe’s number one natural litter for over 15 years.

Four years ago, Healthy Pet repackaged Cat’s Best for the US market, selling it under the Okocat brand. It joins the company’s other eco-friendly animal bedding and litter brands, which include Carefresh, SimplyPine, Critter Care, Puppy Go Potty, and Okocat.

All Okocat clumping products are manufactured in Germany, while their paper and non-clumping wood litter is made in the United States.

What types of cat litter does Okocat offer?

All Okocat litter is biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals, scents, and other additives.

Their wood litter is made from 100% reclaimed fallen timber or unused lumber. Unlike other paper litters made from repurposed newspapers and other used paper products, Okocat produces paper from natural wood fibers in their own processing facility.

These products are safe to flush, although Okocat recommends that you do so slowly and cautiously, never flushing large amounts at once.

Flushing cat waste with a sewer system can introduce toxoplasma gondii parasites to the water supply and infect sea mammals. Because of this threat to wildlife, California law requires all cat litter to bear warnings discouraging people from flushing the litter.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

Positive Reviews

“After experimenting with Fresh Step and feline pine, this is our winner! Fresh step left a chemical smell on our cat. We got the non clumping feline pine and our cat wouldn’t bury his poop in the large pellets. I flush the poop with this litter, eliminating any litter box smell. In a small apartment this is critical. Out of caution for our plumbing I scoop and bag pee clumps and throw them away. The only downside is that this litter tracks a bit, but the benefits far outweigh this small con.” – Katewithacat

“I am so happy to find a super-strong clumping, eco-friendly, non-clay cat litter that doesn’t fill the house with perfume. I only scoop. I have not emptied the cat litter since I discovered Okocat a couple of months ago. I have never smelled ammonia from the Okocat litter even after days of not scooping with 2 cats. It’s absolutely AMAZING!! Everyone must try it.” – susefl

Critical Reviews

“Oh man, I really wanted to like this litter, I read the reviews and it seemed right up my street. However, this stuff tracks insanely badly, large wooden pieces that look sort of like granola. And the clumps barely hold together, so as soon as I shake the poop scooper, it disintegrates, leaving pee pieces back in the litter (and defeating the purpose) Yes, it does smell nice, and it does pretty well on odour control, but that’s its only upside.” – Jaideybean

“Am I the only one who HATES this cat litter??? #1 reason: this litter gets tracked all over my house. We keep litter box in the laundry room…every single time I walk in the house, it is all over the floors, then the next room is the office – all over that floor..then right on it to the kitchen. No one has this problem? I spent $20 on a mat to put outside litter box..that didn’t help. Ughhhhh…so disappointed.” – Shopgirl

Okocat Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter Review

Like all of Okocat’s clumping wood litters, this product is manufactured in Germany. It’s made from reclaimed wood, sourced from fallen timber or recycled lumber materials.

The naturally absorbent capillary system of wood absorbs about 500% of its weight in moisture, traps odors, and discourages bacterial growth. The litter’s patented “Odor Shield Technology” provides odor control for up to 7 days. This clumping litter is infused with natural plant-based binders.

Numerous reviewers complain that the litter was difficult to scoop. Customer reviews indicate that it produces moderately cohesive clumps, so that wasn’t the problem. Because the litter is coarser than most clay products, it won’t pass through some litter scoops. Some people may need to use a scoop with larger slots.

The litter produces minimal dust. Its lightweight particles have a propensity for tracking. Okocat’s natural clumping wood litter tends to create a mess around the litter box and track throughout the house. This can be minimized with a good cat litter mat.

In continuation of the eco-friendly theme, the litter is contained in a biodegradable, compostable package. The box has a handle and spout for easy handling.

The litter is available in a 7.5-lb box, 12-lb box, and 18-lb box. Okocat wood litter is 50-70% lighter than clay litter, so a lightweight box provides greater volume and longevity than an equally light box of the average clay litter.

Excluding shipping, the litter costs between $1.07/lb and $1.24/lb on Chewy.

  1. Our cat is 17 yrs old we have tried so many different cat litters Oko by far is the best. Started using it a few months ago no longer have the ammonia smell, Our cat is urinating a lot more in his old age and with all the other cat litters I was having to change out the box every 2 -3 days. We even tried the self cleaning ones and it made no difference. I even tried the corn cob litter it just attracted flies. My only complaint is it gets stuck in his paws and in the carpet outside the bathroom, and I that can only find it at one store in my area.
