Where is Whole Earth Farms Cat Food Made?

Though the Whole Earth Farms brand may be new to you, you are probably familiar with the parent company – Merrick Pet Care. The Merrick Pet Care company was founded in 1988 and headquartered in Amarillo, Texas. The company was acquired by Nestle Purina Pet Care in 2015 but all Whole Earth Farms products are still made in the United States. Not only is this brand a U.S.-based brand, but they guarantee that none of their ingredients come from China.

Are There Any Recalls for Whole Earth Farms Cat Food?

In addition to making all of their products in the United States, the Whole Earth Farms brand guarantees the quality and safety of their pet foods. In fact, one of the promises they make about their foods is, “cooked in America with the earth’s best ingredients”. All of this being true, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that there are no Whole Earth Farms recalls to date. Merrick Pet Care, on the other hand, has had three recalls in the past 10 years.

Dry Cat Food Recipe Review: Whole Earth Farms Grain-Free Recipe with Real Salmon

This Whole Earth Farms Grain-Free Recipe with Real Salmon dry food is a holistic recipe dry food that will nourish your cat’s body from the inside out. It features real animal proteins like salmon and turkey as well as grain-free carbohydrates. Like all of this brand’s products, it is designed for optimal nutrition and delicious flavor, everything your cat deserves. This formula doesn’t contain any corn, wheat, or soy and it is free from artificial additives, by-products, and ingredients from China. Simply put, it is a high-quality dry food option for cats in all life stages.

As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is real salmon – salmon meal, to be exact. Before you become concerned about the word “meal,” realize that meat meals are just as much a quality ingredient as fresh meats – they may even be better. Fresh meats like salmon contain 70% to 80% moisture by volume so, when the cat food is cooked during processing, much of that moisture is lost and the final volume of protein is much lower. Meat meals, on the other hand, are dried to 10% moisture before they are added to the food which makes them a highly-concentrated source of protein. The fact that salmon meal is the first ingredient speaks to the high protein content of this formula – it is a bonus that turkey meal is the next ingredient and that fresh salmon appears later in the list.

After the salmon meal and turkey meal come the main carbohydrates in this recipe – dried potatoes and peas. Both of these are gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates which means that they offer good digestibility for your cat. In addition to carbohydrate energy, these ingredients also provide some dietary fiber as well as essential nutrients. There are also supplementary sources of fiber like pea fiber and dried alfalfa meal, but the total fiber content of the recipe is only 4%. One ingredient worth mentioning is the pea protein. Plant proteins like this offer lower biological value for cats than animal proteins and it isn’t clear how much this protein contributes to the total protein content of the recipe.

The remaining ingredients in this Whole Earth Farms Grain-Free Recipe with Real Salmon dry food consist primarily of fats, natural flavors, and supplements. The main source of fat in this recipe is chicken fat, a highly nutritious ingredient for cats and a source of concentrated energy. This fat works with the natural fat content in the salmon to provide a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for your cat’s healthy skin and coat. In terms of supplements, this recipe includes vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. The probiotics come from the dried fermentation products and it is worth noting that some of the mineral supplements are chelated, but not all of them.

Growing kittens may require up to twice this amount and pregnant or lactating female cats may need two to four times this amount. For adult cats, follow the feeding recommendations for several weeks while keeping an eye on your cat’s bodyweight and condition. If your cat appears to be gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, you may need to scale back his daily portion a little bit. For cats that lose weight or become lethargic, consider increasing the daily portion. This product should be fed at room temperature and any uneaten portion should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Overall, this Grain-Free Recipe with Real Salmon dry food is an excellent source of balanced nutrition for cats in all life stages. This formula starts off strong with two concentrated sources of animal protein followed by two gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates. With chicken fat as the main source of fat, you can count on this recipe to meet your cat’s energy requirements – it will also keep his coat shiny and his skin healthy. There are a few ingredients this recipe could do without like the pea protein and dried yeast culture, but there don’t appear to be any harmful or highly questionable ingredients. This recipe could benefit from more chelated minerals and natural sources for key nutrients (as opposed to supplements) but it is still a good product.

Do not worry about the moisture content of the fresh meats, either, because the final product still contains 78% moisture which means that the original ingredients won’t lose much of their volume during cooking. This formula actually includes multiple protein sources aside from the tuna and whitefish – you’ll also find chicken liver and dried egg product on the list. Be aware that there are some plant proteins included as well – namely dried peas and organic alfalfa meal. The remaining ingredients consist of natural flavors, supplements, and fats. The main sources of fat are olive oil and flaxseed oil which, though they are plant-based oils, provide a balance of omega oils. It is a little strange to see the fats at the very end of the ingredients list, however.

For adult cats, follow the feeding recommendations for several weeks while keeping an eye on your cat’s bodyweight and condition. Made with real tuna and whitefish, this product is protein-rich and full of flavor – it is also rich in moisture. For carbohydrates, this recipe includes grain-free options like dried peas and organic alfalfa meal. 1. I’ve read your article on Whole Earth canned cat food. My cat loves it, however I’m disappointed that you haven’t mentioned whether their cans contain BPA’s. Their cans are also only 5 oz, instead of the industry standard 5.5 oz. As well, their canned cat food in the chicken-turkey variety sticks to the lids and sides of the cans. The chicken variety also sticks though not nearly as bad as the turkey. Given the 5oz can, you getting less than 5 oz because the food sticks. I’ve contacted Whole Earth and they gave me coupons in answer to my concern, not a reason for the food sticking. Could you find out whether the cans are BPA free and why the food is sticking so badly? I would appreciate that and so would other cat owners who purchase Whole Earth. Thank you Cynthia
