Directions
Because your cat or kitten is unique and ORIJEN™ pet foods are packed with animal protein, feeding requirements will vary with environment, age and activity. That's why we suggest using the feeding guide as a starting point, and monitoring your cat or kitten's weight and adjusting amounts as needed. We also recommend feeding your cat twice daily and always keeping fresh, clean water available. When switching diets, it's important to transition your cat or kitten as it takes time for their digestive system to adapt to the richer nutrient levels in ORIJEN™. Over a 10-14 day period, gradually mix in ORIJEN™, increasing the amount each day so that by day 14 you are feeding 100% ORIJEN. See your veterinarian regularly. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.

One of the most impressive aspects of this cat food is its ingredient list. The WholePrey approach means that it includes a variety of animal proteins, such as poultry, fish, and eggs, mimicking a natural diet. I've noticed that my cat seems more satisfied and energetic since switching to this food, which I attribute to the high-quality, protein-rich ingredients.
The grain-free formula is another significant benefit. Many cats, mine included, tend to digest grain-free food better, and I've observed a noticeable improvement in my cat's digestion and overall health. The absence of unnecessary fillers means that my cat is getting more of the nutrients she needs without the added bulk that can lead to weight gain or digestive issues.
ORIJEN's commitment to using fresh and regional ingredients is also commendable. It's reassuring to know that the food I'm giving my cat is made with high-quality components and doesn't rely on preservatives or artificial flavors. This focus on natural ingredients aligns with my preference for a more organic and wholesome diet for my pet.
The food's appeal to my cat has been undeniable. She took to it immediately, which isn't always the case with new foods. The texture and size of the kibble are perfect for her, and she seems to enjoy meal times more than ever.
TL;DR: ORIJEN Original Cat Food has been a fantastic choice for my cat. Its grain-free, protein-rich formula, made with WholePrey ingredients, provides a balanced and natural diet suitable for all life stages. The use of fresh, regional ingredients and the noticeable health benefits it offers make it a product I trust and recommend for other cat owners looking for high-quality nutrition for their feline companions.
Admittedly, there was another brand that was above ‘Orijen’ in these categories that I wanted to give my cats...but cats are picky, and they did not care for that brand too much...so I went to my second choice, which was ‘Orijen’.
Ever since trying Orijen’s ‘Cat & Kitten’, we have never found another “go-to” food for the cats.
They truly love this stuff. And as you can see in the video, I once got a bag home and (even though they had eaten that morning) they were more than happy to tear the bag open before I could even get to it. (usually I keep the cat food stored away in a cupboard).
If you’re looking for a fragrant, dry food to attract your cats’ attention, this is definitely a go-to. Even with my human nose, as soon as I open the bag I can smell a powerful scent of cat food; it’s not an unpleasant smell, but it is certainly strong enough that a cat will know that the food is there.
As my cats’ responsible human, I am happy with this food because it is responsibly sourced with cat’s health and humane practices in mind. More specifically, it is made of 85% animal ingredients including free-run chicken/turkey, wild-caught herring/flounder/sardines, and cage-free eggs; and 2/3 of their animal ingredients are “fresh or raw”. I am also encouraged by the fact that the first 16 ingredients listed on the bag are all whole animal sources; no fillers, supplements, fruits, veggies, or mysterious compounds.
Additionally, taurine, which you must be wary of in cat food since it can be found in high quantities (particularly in low quality, high protein) cat food and cause health disorders in your pet, is found as a respectably small percentage of this food.
I only wish that Orijen made wet cat food, since making sure cats get enough water is a very important thing. I did try to put some water on their dry food, but they didn’t like that.
My answer to that was to buy a motion sensitive water dispenser, and buy them canned cat food on occasion from another respectable brand.
With regard to price, yes it is rather expensive for a cat food. And getting used to it did take some time. However, after being told that I lost my first cat because of the low quality of the cat food I was feeding him (and I had no idea!), the peace of mind I get now from knowing that I am feeding my cats a properly nutritious food is priceless.
Overall I am very happy with the brand and this flavor, and as you can see in the video and the picture of the damage done to the bag before I could open it and the cats are also very happy with it.
(There’s a picture of the cat food in a bowl next to a lightbulb for reference on the size of the kibble).
