Purina Beyond Cat Food Review

Though there are many different brands that carry the Purina name, Purina Beyond is one of the newer and better options. This brand is formulated by animal nutritionists using natural ingredients sourced from trusted suppliers and produced in company-owned facilities. This brand makes it their mission to provide products that are both naturally and nutritionally complete – your pet doesn’t deserve anything less. Purina Beyond is not just committed to using fresh, natural ingredients – they are also commitment to providing pet foods that are designed for optimal health and wellbeing.

This brand believes that what they put into their products is just as important as what your pet gets out of them. That’s why they use real meat, poultry, or fish as the first ingredient in every recipe with no corn, wheat, or soy products. They don’t use any artificial additives and their products are free from poultry by-product meals. They offer a variety of grain-free options as well as a superfood blend and an indoor cat recipe. They also offer an assortment of grain-free treats.

Where is Purina Beyond Cat Food Made?

The Purina brand of pet food was founded in 1893 and has become one of the biggest names in the pet food industry. Though the brand merged with the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company in 2001, produced largely in the United States. The Purina Beyond website notes that all products are manufactured and guaranteed by the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company and that the brand owns all of the facilities where their products are manufactured. They do not state specifically where those facilities are located, however. It is also telling that the brand’s product labels don’t carry a “Made in the USA” stamp.

Are There Any Recalls for Purina Beyond Cat Food?

Because the Purina brand has been around for more than a century, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that there have been many Purina recalls. There is only one recall affecting a product with the name Purina Beyond but it seems to be a specific product in the Purina One line rather than a product offered by the current Purina Beyond brand. Prior Purina recalls were largely issued due to potential salmonella contamination, low levels of thiamine, and inadequate vitamins and minerals.

Dry Cat Food Recipe Review: Purina Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice Recipe

This Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice recipe is made with real, recognizable, and natural ingredients in a kibble that is loaded with natural flavor. This formula is carefully formulated for nutritional balance and it features real salmon as the number-one ingredient. Other quality ingredients include whole brown rice, fresh cranberries, and spinach. This recipe contains 36% crude protein and 15% fat, so you can rest assured knowing that it will do more than just meet your cat’s minimum nutritional requirements – it will exceed them. Best of all, it is free from artificial additives.

As promised, the first ingredient in this Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice recipe is fresh salmon and it is followed by chicken meal and dried egg product. Fresh salmon is a great ingredient but it contains as much as 70% moisture by volume. This usually means that the final volume of protein provided by this ingredient could be much lower after cooking. That won’t be a problem for this recipe, however, because the second ingredient is a highly-concentrated source of animal protein – chicken meal. Meat meals like chicken meal have already been cooked to remove moisture so their volume doesn’t change as much during processing. You’ll also get some supplementary protein from the dried egg product.

The next few ingredients on the list for this Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice recipe are mostly carbohydrates – pea protein, whole barley, whole oatmeal, and whole brown rice. The pea protein is a plant product and it is included mainly as a source of supplemental source of protein. The problem is that plant proteins are less biologically valuable for dogs than animal proteins. It is unclear how much this ingredient contributes to the total protein of the product, but it could be significant since it is the fourth ingredient. The next three ingredients are whole grains. Whole grains are considered digestible for some cats, but many cats have trouble with grains – especially gluten-containing grains like barley. There are also whole cranberries, dried tomatoes, and dried spinach which contribute some carbohydrate energy and supplementary protein.

The remaining ingredients in this product consist of fats, natural flavors, and supplements. The main source of fat in this recipe is beef fat. Animal fats are more biologically valuable than plant fats, but beef fat is not the best ingredient – it contains fewer nutrients than chicken fat but it isn’t necessarily a bad ingredient. It works with the natural fat content of the salmon to provide a balance of omega oils. The supplements listed consist primarily of vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, none of the minerals seem to be chelated which would make them more valuable for your cat.

This Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 36%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 15%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 12%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1.0%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – -0.9%
  • Calorie Content – 4,053 kcal/kg (481 kcal/cup)

This Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance of adult cats. To feed your cat this recipe, offer cats weighing 5 to 8 pounds 1/3 to 2/3 cups per day and cats weighing 9 to 14 pounds 2/3 to 1 cup daily, ideally dividing it into two meals. Growing kittens may require up to twice this amount and pregnant or lactating female cats may need two to four times this amount. For adult cats, follow the feeding recommendations for several weeks while keeping an eye on your cat’s bodyweight and condition. If your cat appears to be gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, you may need to scale back his daily portion a little bit. For cats that lose weight or become lethargic, consider increasing the daily portion. This product should be fed at room temperature and any uneaten portion should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Purina Beyond Dry Cat Food Recipe Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Overall, this Beyond Salmon & Whole Brown Rice recipe is a decent product but you can certainly do better. This recipe starts off strong with three sources of animal protein at the top of the list but it starts to go downhill with pea protein as the fourth ingredient. This recipe contains whole grains which are digestible for some cats, but likely to cause digestive issues with others. You should also consider that the main source of fat isn’t as nutritious as it could be and there may be too much fiber, measured at 4%. This recipe could benefit from some chelated minerals and dried fermentation products for probiotic support.

Wet Cat Food Recipe Review: Purina Beyond Gravy Tuna, Herring & Sweet Potato Recipe

This Beyond Gravy Tuna, Herring & Sweet Potato recipe is made with real tuna and herring as the main ingredients with sweet potato for carbohydrate energy. This formula features real, recognizable ingredients that have been carefully selected to work in tandem to support your cat’s nutritional needs. It doesn’t contain any corn, wheat, or soy and it is free from by-products and artificial additives. Simply put, it is a nutritious recipe loaded with real meat and natural flavor.

The first ingredient in this Beyond Gravy Tuna, Herring & Sweet Potato recipe is fish broth. Though this ingredient doesn’t provide much in the way of nutrition, it keeps the product moist and contributes plenty of natural fish flavor. The next ingredient is fresh tuna, followed by fresh chicken and liver. All of these are protein-rich ingredients and valuable additions to this formula. The only thing to note here is that the liver doesn’t come from a named source – this makes it difficult to judge the quality of that ingredient. You’ll also find dried egg product and herring on the list as supplementary proteins.

The remaining ingredients in this product consist of thickeners, gluten-free carbohydrates, and supplements. The main carbohydrates in this recipe are sweet potato and brown rice, both gluten-free and digestible carbohydrates. The only potential problem is the brown rice – some cats have trouble digesting grains. The potato starch and guar gum both act as thickeners and supplementary sources of dietary fiber. There are a number of synthetic supplements which are needed to ensure nutritional balance. Unfortunately, only one of the minerals is chelated and there are no dried fermentation products for probiotic support.

This Beyond Gravy Tuna, Herring & Sweet Potato recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 9%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 2%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 1.0%
  • Moisture (Max) – 82%
  • Taurine (Min) – 0.05%
  • Ash (Max) – 3.5%
  • Calorie Content – 834 kcal/kg (70 kcal/can)

This Beyond Gravy Tuna, Herring & Sweet Potato recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance of adult cats. To feed your cat this recipe, offer 1 can per 2.5 to 3 pounds of bodyweight per day, ideally dividing it into two meals. This product should be fed at room temperature and any uneaten portion should be refrigerated.

Purina Beyond Canned Cat Food Recipe Rating: 4/5 stars

Overall, this Beyond Gravy Tuna, Herring & Sweet Potato recipe offers decent quality and balanced nutrition for adult cats. It isn’t a problem that the recipe lists fish broth first – this is common with wet foods. It is good to see several sources of animal protein on the list as well as digestible carbohydrates like sweet potato and brown rice. Where this recipe could be improved would be in the addition of some more chelated minerals and dried fermentation products for probiotic support. It also wouldn’t hurt to swap some of the synthetic supplements for fresh fruits and vegetables to act as natural sources for the same nutrients.

Final Thoughts

On the whole, Purina Beyond isn’t the worst cat food brand out there, but it isn’t the best either. It may be one of the better Purina brands, but most of the products still only earn a 3.5-star rating. It is good that every recipe starts with a source of animal protein but some of the formulas still seem to be a little heavy in plant-based ingredients, including plant proteins. Most of the products also rely heavily on synthetic supplementation for nutritional balance when fresh fruits and vegetables might provide more usable sources for the same nutrients. If you’re looking for an affordable cat food that gets decent ratings, this brand may be one to consider.

  1. I would like to thank you for reviewing the Beyond line of cat food but there is one correction to be made, the foods do contain soy. Along with that, add synthetic Vitamin K, linked to several health issues and then there’s “animal fat” (a.k.a. euthanized animal) I’ve found that the Wellness Core line scores considerably higher even though they recently revamped their packaging and possibly the recipes as well because my cat has not wanted it anymore, and they now have a terrible smell upon opening the can. It seems pet owners are running out of healthy affordable options.

  2. I have two cats–one is a 12 year old male and the other is a 1 year old female. I have been feeding them a variety of wet canned foods but their favorite food to eat is the Beyond chicken dry food. I have noticed major stores like Fred Meyers is discontinuing the product line so started reading some reviews (very mixed) to see if I will be able to buy it later on or if there is a nutritional problem I should be aware of.
Help! I don’t want to overreact and change their diets if I can avoid it.

  3. Buy only the ones made without carregeenan, menadione sodium bisulfite, xantham gum, added color, and agar-agar and you’ll be fine

  4. I don’t know what’s in Purina beyond simply, but after switching my 3 indoor cats from friskies dry food to Purina beyond simply salmon they were all dead within 5 months! I know it had to be the cat food because that was the only change that had been made in their lives before their deaths. They were previously all healthy and happy at ages 7 9 and 15.
