Natural Choice Cat Food Recalls 2019

All of Nutro’s Natural Choice cat foods are produced in U.S. facilities located in Tennessee, California, and Missouri. The Nutro Company conducts more than 600 quality checks on a daily basis and they have a team of quality experts onsite to enforce strict standards for safety and quality. Despite these checks and standards, The Nutro Company has still had a few recalls on their products.

  • In 2007, Nutro was on the list of brands affected by a Menu Foods recall which included more than 5,000 pet food products. The Nutro Company did not disclose how many packages of their products were affected by the recall.
  • In May 2009, Nutro issued a recall for select dry cat food formulas due to high levels of zinc and low levels of potassium. The company blamed this problem on a production error with a premix company.
  • The Nutro Company has also been criticized by PETA for testing their products in below-par animal testing laboratories. The company denies the use of animal testing practices.

Overall Nutro Natural Choice Cat Food Review and Analysis

The Nutro Natural Choice brand of cat food is widely regarded as one of the higher quality options out there. This brand uses only high-quality, natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals to achieve well-balanced nutrition. Not only do Nutro products include premium ingredients, but they offer plenty of rich, natural flavor that cats love. Nutro products are not made with any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives and many formulas are properly balanced for cats in all life stages, though kitten- and senior-specific formulas are available as well.

Nutro Natural Choice formulas can be broken down into a number of different categories. One option is to divide them by life stage – Nutro offers options for kittens, adult cats, and senior cats. Another option is to divide them by lifestyle – there are formulas available for both indoor and outdoor cats. Finally, you can divide Nutro Natural Choice formulas by specific needs. Nutro offers recipes for cats that have sensitivity to grains, cats that need to lose weight, cats that are finicky eaters, and cats that suffer from frequent hairballs. All of these products are made with high-quality natural ingredients but the supplementary ingredients vary depending on the purpose of the product.

While all of Nutro’s products are made with quality ingredients, the Natural Choice line of products offers a few specific guarantees. For example, Natural Choice cat foods offer the guarantee of great taste because real poultry or fish is always the #1 ingredient. Nutro also uses a wide variety of textures to make their products more palatable for cats, especially for finicky eaters. No matter which Natural Choice product you choose, Nutro claims that every one of their natural ingredients can be traced back to the supplier. Nutro is also committed to sustainability so their operations are designed to minimize waste and environmental impact in addition to sourcing their ingredients from sustainable sources.

Individual Recipe Review (Dry) Nutro Natural Choice Indoor Adult Chicken & Whole Brown Rice

NaeNae @ Amazon.com says…

My cats love this food! I’ve been feeding it to them for a while and every time I try to sneak them different food, I just get stared at lol 😉 They don’t like the fish flavor but they go crazy over the chicken. It’s pricey but well worth the money.

This dry food recipe is designed specifically to meet the needs of indoor adult cats. All cats benefit from high-quality animal proteins, so it makes sense that this formula lists fresh chicken as its number one ingredient. The Nutro Company offers a number of claims and benefits about this product. For one thing, it includes chicken to help your cat build strong muscles as well as natural fiber to minimize hairball formation. Chicken is a highly digestible protein which will help to minimize litterbox odor, and the formula is designed to provide ideal calorie content to help your cat maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, the product is rich in natural soils to ensure a soft, shiny coat.

The first five ingredients in this Natural Choice Indoor Adult formula are chicken, chicken meal, brewers rice, pea protein, and whole brown rice. The first two ingredients immediately earn this formula bonus points because they show not one, but two quality animal proteins. Fresh chicken is loaded with protein as well as healthy vitamins and minerals. One thing worth noting, however, is that fresh meats like chicken can contain up to 80% moisture so, once the product is cooked down, the actual volume of meat will be much lower. This is not a problem for this formula, however, because chicken meal is the second ingredient. Chicken meal has already been cooked down to a moisture level around 10% so it offers up to 300% more protein by volume than fresh chicken. The fact that this ingredient is listed second means that this formula is very high in animal protein.

The next two ingredients on the list – brewers rice and pea protein – are somewhat troubling. Brewers rice is a byproduct of rice milling and it consists of the small fragments of milled rice kernels that are left behind from milling brown rice. Essentially, brewers rice is rice without most of the nutrients. Brewers rice is used exclusively for pet food and dairy feed because it is not deemed fit for human consumption. If this is the case, do you really want to see it in your cat’s food? Pea protein is also troubling because it is usually included in lower quality pet foods to boost the protein content without adding extra meat. This ingredient is not a big problem when it appears halfway through the ingredients list but here it is fourth – this is a bad sign.

The fifth ingredient in this formula is whole brown rice, a quality source of digestible carbohydrate and dietary fiber for cats. Brown rice contains a number of nutrients including phosphorus, manganese, niacin, vitamin E, and vitamin B6. This ingredient alone is of fairly high quality but it is a little troubling to see it as one of multiple carbohydrate sources in this cat food recipe. Cats have no biological need for carbohydrates so a quality cat food should only contain a low to moderate amount of quality carbohydrate. This cat food formula also contains dehydrated alfalfa meal, potato protein, dried plain beet pulp, flaxseed and oat fiber further down the list. This is a lot of carbohydrate and fiber for a cat food recipe.

Some of the more valuable ingredients included in this Natural Choice Indoor Adult formula are chicken fat, chelated minerals, and vitamin supplements. Dietary fat is the second most important macronutrient in a cat’s diet and it should always come from animal-based sources. This recipe does include some plant-based fats as well in the form of flaxseed and soybean oil. These are not necessarily harmful ingredients but it would be much better to see more animal fats like salmon oil. Salmon oil would help to ensure a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from all-animal sources. Flaxseed does contain a mixture of both but they are less biologically valuable for your cat than they would be from an animal source.

Chelated minerals are an excellent addition to this cat food formula. These are minerals which have been chemically bound to protein molecules, thus making them easier for your cat’s body to digest and absorb than traditional mineral supplements. Also included in this formula are a number of vitamin supplements. Again, these are not bad ingredients but they would be better if they came from natural sources like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Overall, this Natural Choice Indoor Adult formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 33%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 7%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calorie Content – 341 kcal/cup

This formula meets the AAFCO nutritional requirements for cats in all life stages. This formula contains a decent amount of crude protein and crude fat, according to the guaranteed analysis, but the crude fiber content is a little higher than it really needs to be. Since cats are obligate carnivores they have a limited ability to digest carbohydrates and to break down dietary fiber so it would be better to see a lower number here, closer to 3% than 7%. In order to determine how much to feed your cat, follow the feeding recommendations on the package determined by your cat’s weight.

Final Thoughts

This Nutro Natural Choice Indoor Adult Chicken & Whole Brown Rice formula does meet the minimum nutritional requirements for adult cats and it is AAFCO-approved. Still, if you review the list of ingredients used in this product you may have a few questions. The first two ingredients are solid – both quality sources of animal protein – but the next few ingredients are somewhat questionable. In fact, this product contains a number of ingredients that can only be said to provide low to moderate nutritional value for cats. It is always somewhat troubling to see brown rice, one of the ingredients included in the product name, listed fifth after two low-quality ingredients. This is by no means an unhealthy cat food formula and it does offer some good nutritional value, but there are other formulas out there that offer higher nutritional value with fewer questionable ingredients.
