This family-owned company runs its own cannery and dry food production facilities in British Columbia and emphasizes its end-to-end supervision of the sourcing, manufacturing, and distribution process.

Taplow Ventures gets its name from company founder Mike Florian’s fishing vessel. What started as a career as a fisherman and fishing boat owner lead to the ownership of a fish feed company in the 1980’s. The Taplow Company, originally dedicated to selling fish feed, entered the pet food space when guard dogs couldn’t keep out of the fish food.

Suspecting that a higher-quality, satiating food might deter the dogs from the company’s product, a team developed the first dog food. The company started selling dog food in 1989 under the FirstMate brand.

Kasiks is the company’s answer to demand for a limited-ingredient, grain-free food.

What types of cat food are included in the Kasiks line?

Kasiks offers only wet food. You won’t find any dry, freeze-dried, or raw products in this line.

Each recipe features a single meat protein, making them appropriate for cats with food sensitivities and allergies. The recipes include wild-caught Pacific Coho salmon and wild-caught Pacific albacore tuna. The poultry formulas feature free-run, cage-free chicken and turkey.

The meat is mixed with legumes, fruits, and vegetables, but all products in the line are completely free of grains, gluten, and potatoes.

Because legumes are protein-dense, some formulas in the line contain considerable concentrations of plant protein.

The foods are manufactured in a human-grade facility in British Columbia.

To help you select the right formula for your cat, the FirstMate website includes a Diet Selection Guide.

What do customers think of Kasiks cat food?

The brand’s popular Cage-Free Chicken Grain-Free canned cat food formula has 13 reviews on Chewy, earning it a 3.8 out of 5 star rating. Just 77% of reviewers say they’d recommend this product.

Let’s take a look at what customers are saying about this formula.

Positive Reviews

“My cats like this and eat it well. It looks like real chicken, and smells GREAT. I even tried a bite myself and it really is just chicken! It’s a soft pate, and the cats eat it very well, although they prefer if I add a little warm water to it and make it a bit brothier. I wrote the company because I hadn’t heard of them, and they were very transparent about where their products are made, and they’ve never had a safety recall! I stand behind this product 100% It’s a GREAT cat food. My cats DO prefer the turkey flavor, but they do also eat this fine as well. The only down side is that it is impossible to rinse the lid clean, so you can’t recycle the lids. The cans themselves wash out fine with hot water, just not the lids.” – Phaewyren

“I am always looking for higher quality grain free foods for my three cats that aren’t too pricey. I was glad to try this new brand offered in chewy. All three of my cats enjoyed it. Plus it offers two non-fish varieties, no carrageenan, quality meats, cans do not contain bpa, and none of the typical grain free fillers that spike blood sugar (ex potatoes/tapioca). I will continue to purchase this product.” – Britlc3

Negative Reviews

“I think my order history will prove that I have tried just about every premium wet food that Chewy has offered over the past year. This one seemed to have healthy ingredients and it may, but all five of my cats sniffed it and ran. I even mixed their favorite foods and toppers and they simply refused to touch it. I hate to be so harsh on a review and my cats are very picky, but even my diabetic cat who is usually starving decided he would rather die before eating this food. Sorry… it was a total bomb in my house.” – Ranger

“We have 3 cats and have a rotation of anywhere between 2-4 fosters. NO ONE liked this food!! Some cats wouldn’t touch it, and others would eat a few bites and then snub it. My one cat who did sort of eat it, broke out a few days after I fed it to her and she eats other grain-free chicken foods just fine. While the ingredients are truly top notch and the price is very reasonable, no one will really eat it. Which has NEVER happened with the sheer number of cats we have- usually someone will like it.” – felinas

KASIKS Cage-Free Chicken Formula Grain-Free Canned Cat Food Review

First 5 Ingredients: Boneless Chicken, Water Sufficient For Processing, Pea Starch, Sodium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate

It’s always important to note that all ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. A moisture-packed ingredient like boneless chicken is about 70% water prior to cooking. After processing, this meat ingredient may descend the ingredient list.

The second ingredient is water sufficient for processing, followed by pea starch. All Kasiks formulas contain legumes rather than potatoes as a starch source.

After meat and pea starch is a series of supplements, along with a handful of other notable inclusions. The food contains kale, which is naturally rich in vitamins and minerals. At the very bottom of the ingredient list are blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, and coconut. These are antioxidant-rich ingredients that round out the recipe.

Overall, this is a meat-rich, moisture-packed cat food. The formula contains a respectable 96% protein from animal sources and 4% protein from plants. Considering that the source of animal protein is highly digestible boneless chicken, this looks like a nourishing food rich in biologically available protein.

Because it contains just one source of animal protein and is free from common allergens, this limited-ingredient food is a good choice for cats with allergies and food sensitivities.

The guaranteed analysis indicates that this wet food contains 10% minimum crude protein, 4.3% minimum crude fat, and approximately 5.3% carbohydrate.

According to the Kasiks feeding guidelines of about half a can for every eight pounds of bodyweight, it would cost about $.56 – $.85 each day to feed an average 10-lb cat.

This cost estimate is based on Chewy prices and excludes shipping costs.
