The Honest Kitchen company was founded in 2002 by Lucy, a dedicated dog lover who wanted to provide her dog with the freshest, most delicious dog food possible. Unfortunately, the kind of product she was looking for didn’t exist yet on pet store shelves so she set out to make it herself – and thus The Honest Kitchen company was born. This brand began with a single recipe – the Verve formula – but quickly expanded to include a varied selection of premium pet food products for both dogs and cats. Today, The Honest Kitchen offers an assortment of minimally processed foods made from healthy, human-grade whole foods in flavorful formulas that any pet lover would be happy to feed their pet. This company offers their customers what they call “The Honest Difference” which promises 100% human-grade ingredients, healthy whole foods, and a variety of health benefits.

Where is The Honest Kitchen Cat Food Made?

All of The Honest Kitchen’s pet food products are made from wholesome human-grade ingredients and their products are dehydrated rather than cooked like traditional pet foods. The Honest Kitchen is headquartered in San Diego, California but their products are manufactured in a human-grade food facility located in Illinois. Not only does The Honest Kitchen use ingredients that are fit for human consumption, but their manufacturing processes are approved by the FDA as well. The Honest Kitchen adheres to more than 100 manufacturing and quality control regulations to ensure the safety and quality of their products.

Are There Any Recalls for The Honest Kitchen Cat Food in 2019?

The Honest Kitchen proudly declares that they use human-grade ingredients in their formulas as well as human-grade manufacturing facilities. It is also important to note that many of the ingredients this company uses are organic and locally sourced. In addition to using the best ingredients available, The Honest Kitchen adheres to strict standards for quality and safety. Unfortunately, accidents still happen and the company has been subject to one recall in brand history. Here are the details of that recall:

  • In February 2013, the FDA issued a recall for certain batches of Verve, Zeal, and Thrive dog food due to potential salmonella contamination of parsley from a certain supplier.

What Kind of Products Does The Honest Kitchen Offer?

The Honest Kitchen is not the largest pet food brand out there – they only offer a limited selection of products for both dogs and cats. For dogs, there are five whole-grain food options and six grain-free options. The products available for cats are a little more limited with just two grain-free food recipes to choose from. Both of these recipes are dehydrated foods that need to be rehydrated before being offered to your cat. The Honest Kitchen also makes cat treats and a few nutritional supplements as well.

The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Cat Food Products

When it comes to their cat food products, The Honest Kitchen only has two dehydrated recipes for cats. The first is Prowl, a grain-free recipe made with chicken and vegetables. The second is Grace, a grain-free turkey-based cat food. Both are made with 100% human grade ingredients with no by-products or artificial additives. Here is a list of The Honest Kitchen dry cat food recipes:

  • Prowl Grain Free Chicken Cat Food
  • Grace Grain Free Turkey Cat Food

The Honest Kitchen Cat Treats and Supplements

For treats, The Honest Kitchen offers three meaty options – Wishes grain-free haddock treats, Smittens heart-shaped fish treats, and Wonders grain-free pollock treats. They also offer a functional liquid treat made from bone broth flavored with turmeric. In addition to these treats, The Honest Kitchen offers two digestive health supplements – the Perfect Form herbal supplement and Pro Bloom instant goat’s milk. Here is a list of The Honest Kitchen treats and supplements:

  • Wishes Pure Fish Treats
  • Smittens Fish Treats
  • Wonders Pure Fish Treats
  • Functional Liquid Treat Bone Broth with Turmeric Spice
  • Perfect Form Herbal Digestive Supplement
  • Pro Bloom Instant Goat’s Milk Probiotic Supplement

Dry Cat Food Recipe Review: The Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Chicken Cat Food

This The Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Chicken Cat Food recipe is made with 70% free-range chicken and a variety of other nutrient-rich ingredients. In each 4-pound box of dehydrated food you will find a full 12 pounds of fresh ingredients! This includes 11 pounds of chicken, 5 eggs, 2 sweet potatoes, 2 potatoes, 1 ½ bunches of spinach, 4 handfuls of cranberries, and ¼ small pumpkin. As you can see, all of these ingredients are 100% natural and they are human-grade as well. You can feel good about feeding your cat this dehydrated recipe from The Honest Kitchen.

Comparing this recipe to other cat food products is a little tricky because it is not your standard kibble. Rather than being subjected to the high-heat cooking process known as extrusion, The Honest Kitchen cooks their food slowly at low heat, carefully removing moisture while preserving the nutritional integrity of the raw ingredients. The total moisture content of The Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Chicken Cat Food is just over 5%. The crude protein content of this recipe is 39% with 29.5% fat and 2.38% fiber. If you convert these values to dry matter basis using the 5.2% moisture level, you get 41% crude protein, 31% fat, and 2.5% fiber.

This Holistic Select recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 39%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 29.5%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 2.38%
  • Moisture (Max) – 5.2%
  • Calcium (Min) – 0.93%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.81%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 8.93%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 1.19%
  • Calorie Content – 576 calories/cup

This The Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Chicken Cat Food recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance. To feed your cat this recipe, offer cats weighing 5 to 10 pounds about ¼ to ½ cup daily, ideally dividing it into two meals – you will need to rehydrate the product before feeding. Follow the feeding recommendations for several weeks while keeping an eye on your cat’s bodyweight and condition. If your cat appears to be gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, you may need to scale back his daily portion a little bit. For cats that lose weight or become lethargic, consider increasing the daily portion. This product should be fed at room temperature and any uneaten portion should be stored in a cool, dry place.

The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Cat Food Recipe Rating: 4/5 stars

Overall, this The Honest Kitchen Prowl Grain-Free Chicken Cat Food recipe is a high-quality product loaded with high-quality ingredients. Made with free-range chicken and farm-fresh eggs, this recipe is packed with protein and healthy fats. It is also rich in fresh fruits and vegetables which provide carbohydrate energy, dietary fiber, and natural sources for key nutrients. This recipe also contains chelated minerals which help to ensure optimal nutrient absorption and a few synthetic vitamin supplements. While this formula is full of healthy ingredients, it is a little heavy on the plant products and it could benefit from the addition of some probiotics. All in all, however, it would be a great choice to feed your cat.

Final Thoughts

The Honest Kitchen brand as a whole sets itself apart from other pet food brands in several important ways. For one thing, this brand only offers dehydrated pet food products – they don’t use the heat-damaging process of extrusion which destroys much of the nutritional integrity of raw ingredients. This brand also uses 100% human-grade ingredients and produces their recipes in human-grade facilities. The Honest Kitchen is very serious about offering pet owners the very best in pet nutrition to ensure that their pets lead long, happy, and healthy lives.

  • can anyone tell me how to make my cat eat Honest Kitchen food. It is the one brand that it does not want to eat and i dont know if its because he is now used to it or maybe there are stuff wrong with the brand. Is anyone’s cat not wanting to eat Honest Kitchen products. I wrote to them asking for advice but they didnt respond

    • If your still having a problem getting your kit to eat this food, maybe you can mix in wet canned food to introduce new texture and smells.

  • Even though none of the ingredients are from China (big print), but some ingredients are sourced from “around the world” (small print). I believe that should be noted in reviews of the product. If the product only has the ingredients stated on the box why isn’t it sourced strictly from USA or listing of what is gotten where? I noticed this info is lacking in reviews of this product I have read. Thank you

  • This “review” reads like repurposed text from HK marketing collateral. There is a dearth of critical thinking or actual reviewing here.
