The brand focuses on creating “holistic” foods by incorporating nutraceuticals and supplemental ingredients that aren’t commonly found in pet food.

Theoretically, this combination of ingredients extends the health and happiness of the pets who eat them.

What types of cat food does Health Extension offer?

Health Extension offers both grain-inclusive and grain-free dry and canned foods for cats.

Every recipe follows a definite structure; meat is always the first ingredient, followed by fruits and vegetables or grains. What makes Health Extension foods different from most is the inclusion of what the company describes as “beneficial ingredients” or nutraceuticals.

Health Extension COO Brad Gruber states that Health Extension foods provide the “…largest vitamin and mineral panel on the market (including organic apple cider vinegar, turmeric and colostrum)”.

The company promises that their recipes will never include wheat, gluten, soy, corn, or animal by-products. Additionally, they refuse to use artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Health Extension foods consist of American-grown produce, meat from the United States, France, Canada, and New Zealand, and is free from China-sourced ingredients. Their dry foods are manufactured in upstate New York, while the wet products are made in a New Jersey cannery.

What do customers think of Health Extension cat food?

Let’s take a look at what customers are saying about one of the brand’s most popular formulas.

Health Extension’s Feline Dry Kitten & Cat Food has 32 reviews on Chewy, giving it a 4 out of 5 star rating. 84% of those reviewers say that they’d recommend the food.

Here’s what a few real customers say about it:

Positive Reviews

“My cats of all ages like it. I don’t expect them to love it; that is reserved for dry food of very questionable quality, and I prefer they like their wet food better than dry food. The pieces are small enough to be eaten by small kittens and the ingredients are good enough to be eaten by them. Plus, the price is excellent.” – Jane

“Discovered corn & by products are BAD for kitties, especially ones with upper respiratory issues. Our kitties love this food. 1 week in & all 3 have silkier fur. No problem with switching, no gacking. 6 paws up 🙂 TY Chewy.” – Mommy2juan

Negative Reviews

“I really wanted to like this product, but unfortunately, our cats didn’t. What I liked about Health Extension is that it has quality ingredients and is made in the USA. That apparently doesn’t matter to our two boys. Instead of eating this food, they’d go over and steal the cheap stuff from our neighbor cat’s bowl. I tried adding sardine juice to the food. Bacon fat couldn’t even tempt them. Guess I’m buying the cheap stuff from now on. I was able to donate the rest to the humane society. I hope some other kitties will actually eat it.” – Jill

“Although this product may work for some cats out there, for mine, I have never smelled anything so terrible in my life! Not only did her trips to the litter box have me wanting to go outside, she started having terrible gas as well. Switched her back to her previous food, and immediately everything was fine.” – Teresa61

Health Extension Feline Dry Kitten & Cat Food Review

First 5 Ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Dried Egg Product

Like all Health Extension recipes, this food features meat as the number one ingredient. The formula starts with chicken as the first ingredient, followed by chicken meal. Because chicken meal is dehydrated, it’s a concentrated source of animal protein. After chicken meal are two grains; both brown rice and oatmeal are used. Brown rice is more nutrient-dense than white rice, but is only minimally valuable to your carnivorous cat. Oatmeal also contributes vitamins and minerals, but isn’t an ideal cat food ingredient.

Dried egg product refers to any processed, dehydrated egg product. Chicken fat is an optimal fat source for cats. After chicken fat is flaxseed, which is a plant source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Ideally, your cat should get these from animal sources.

Menhaden fish meal is the next ingredient on the list, followed by herring oil. This fish oil is a great animal source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which promote  a healthy skin and coat and are a great source of DHA, which can help to support brain health.

After all of the animal-based ingredients, we see a handful of fruits and vegetables. The recipe includes sweet potato, cranberries, blueberries, and tomato pomace.

The vitamins and minerals included in the recipe are chelated. Chelated minerals are chemically bound to amino acids, making them easier for the body to absorb. It’s also supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health, along with probiotics for digestive health and immune support.

In addition to standard vitamins and minerals, this recipe includes a variety of unconventional supplemental ingredients.

    • Chicory root – a prebiotic that can promote nutrient absorption and healthy digestion
    • Barley malt – this ingredient may promote digestive health
    • Organic apple cider vinegar – this ingredient is associated with numerous health claims, but Health Extension points to its ability to “boost immune systems”
    • Ginger – can promote digestive health
    • Green tea extract  – an antioxidant that may inhibit some cancer growth
    • Dehydrated kelp – rich in vitamins and minerals

Overall, this is a slightly above-average grain-inclusive dry food.

It’s about 80% meat, which is a relatively high percentage for a grain-inclusive kibble diet. It’s 36% crude protein, 20% crude fat, and just under 25% carbohydrates. The added nutraceuticals are an interesting touch, and customer reviews suggest that they promote digestive health.

However, no amount of nutraceuticals can make dry food a good source of moisture for your cat. With 10% maximum moisture content, this food simply cannot provide the hydration your cat requires and should derive from their food.

It’s available in a 4-lb bag or a 15-lb bag.

Based on Health Extension’s feeding guidelines for an average 10-lb cat, this food costs between $.27 and $.48 each day.

This cost estimate is based on Chewy prices and excludes shipping costs.
