Goodlife Cat Food Review

Mars debuted the Goodlife brand in 2007.

Goodlife is one of over 42 pet food brands owned by Mars Petcare, which is the world’s largest pet food company.

Although the brand originally offered foods for both dogs and cats, Goodlife, also known as The Goodlife Recipe, eventually discontinued its dog food line. It’s presently a cat food-exclusive brand. The brand’s website explains that “We help your cat to live life to the fullest…by using high-quality ingredients filled with nutrients and deliciousness.”

It’s positioned as a relatively affordable brand providing wholesome, nourishing foods that improve the lives of cats who eat them.

What types of cat food does Goodlife offer?

Goodlife presents a small selection of three dry cat food recipes. Each of these recipes fulfills Goodlife’s three nutritional promises:

  • They’re made with chicken or salmon as the first ingredient.
  • They’re free from soy and wheat.
  • They don’t contain any artificial flavors or preservatives.

Despite the initial appeal of these qualities, these recipes are far from nutritionally ideal.

Chicken or salmon is the first ingredient, but these foods are made with numerous high-carbohydrate plant ingredients and sources of plant protein.

While the recipes are free from soy and wheat, they aren’t grain-free or exceptionally low in carbohydrates. The brand previously included corn in that claim, but has since started using corn gluten meal as a low-cost protein source.

Although Goodlife recipes are free from artificial flavors and chemical preservatives, they do contain artificial colors. Artificial colors do nothing but make the food look pretty for humans and potentially lead to feline health issues.

Finally, dry food is fundamentally nutritionally inadequate, and Goodlife doesn’t present any hydrating options.

All Goodlife foods are manufactured in Illinois.

What do customers think of Goodlife cat food?

In order to understand how customers feel about Goodlife cat food, let’s consult the reviews on one of the brand’s most popular formulas.

Goodlife’s Real Chicken and Brown Rice recipe has 158 customer reviews on Chewy, earning it a 4.8 out of 5 star rating. 96% of reviewers say that they’d recommend the product.

Here’s what real customers say about the food:

Positive Reviews

“The cats seem to like this food and they don’t seem to throw up as much. I’ve bought much more expensive cat food that they didn’t like. So yeah, I’ll recommend this stuff.” – Jobe

“I bought this for my 2 indoor cats and they love it! I like that the ingredients include the brown rice. I also like it doesn’t contain a lot of fillers. I only give them 2/3 cup at night and they eat all of it! I definitely would recommend it . Also the price for this size bag is unbeatable!” – Belinda

Negative Reviews

“Was excited to find the poundage at a good price for our cat rescue. But, after opening the bag we saw the colored pieces. Although we read the ingredients, the coloring escaped us. Can’t figure out why a decent food needs to have coloring. The cats don’t care what color their food is, so adding any type of chemical based ingredient seems unwarranted. Although we’d planned on stocking up on this help save our food budget, we won’t be buying again.” – Wildcat

“My cat loved eating this, but it gave him diarrhea. He has a normal GI system (as far as we know) and I mixed it with his old dry food to help transition. I also had him on it for 2 wks to see if maybe he will acclimate, but he never did. I suspect the diarrhea is from the grain (brown rice?) because once I switched him to a grain-free formula, he was fine. Maybe it would do fine with other cats.” – Bebe

Goodlife Dry Cat Food, Real Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Review

First 5 Ingredients: Chicken, Brown Rice, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Brewers Rice

In keeping with the Goodlife promise of chicken standing at the top of the ingredient list, this recipe begins with chicken. Note, however, that this chicken attained this prominent position on the ingredient list by being the heaviest ingredient in the recipe. Fresh chicken is 70% water weight and not a concentrated source of animal protein. If weighed after processing, it would likely occupy a lower spot on the ingredient list.

Second on the list is brown rice. Brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, but is nevertheless of minimal value for an obligate carnivore like your cat. Chicken by-product meal is the third ingredient. This is a rendered meal made from by-products of chicken processing for human food consumption. It consists of a combination of nutritionally valuable and minimally digestible ingredients, including chicken backs, feet, and viscera.

Corn gluten meal is a high-protein by-product of corn processing. Its high protein density makes it a popular inexpensive animal feed. However, cats thrive on animal protein, not plant protein. Plant protein adds to the guaranteed analysis, but has minimal bioavailability for your carnivorous cat.

After this source of plant protein is brewer’s rice, which is a byproduct of rice processing. Brewer’s rice is nutritionally equivalent to white rice.

The recipe includes two vaguely-specified animal ingredients: animal fat and natural flavor. Both of these ingredients may be extracted from unknown animals, including beef, pork, sheep, or poultry.

To add a little life to your cat’s bowl, the food is infused with added color.

The recipe includes small amounts of dried peas, dried apples, tomato pomace, dried sweet potato, dried cranberries, blueberry pomace, and dried spinach.

Fish oil is at the bottom of the ingredient list. This ingredient is a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and contributes to a healthy skin and coat. The final ingredient on the list is yucca schidigera extract, which may help to support joint health. In addition to joint health benefits, this extract has “improved the character and reduced the intensity of faecal aroma” in cats and dogs.

In total, the food consists of 38.5% crude protein, 14.5% crude fat, and 26% carbohydrates.

Based on Goodlife’s feeding recommendations for a 10-lb cat, this food costs approximately $.19 – $.29 each day.

This cost estimate is based on Chewy prices and excludes shipping costs.

  • I have been buying good life dry cat food for awhile now. My cats love it. Lately though I have been unable to find it. All the places I have been buying it have discontinued it. What is going on?

  • Hi. As recently as this summer your products are no longer being sold at Walmart
I’ve been to several in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania region and they are no longer sold there. I asked Walmart employees and they have no answer, just to come back in the future
So I went on Amazon and I noticed several other consumers complaining about this, all from this year 2018 that they cant find your product anywhere or Walmart
So I’ve just acclimated my cats to the Kirkland brand being sold at Costco
My question is, why would your company stop making or selling this popular cat food in Walmart or any large retailer
