Who Manufactures Go! Natural?

The Go! natural brand of cat food is produced and manufactured by the Petcurean Pet Nutrition Company. Petcurean was founded in 1999 as a family business in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada by a pair of friends who sought to create a product that would provide pets with fresh, nutrient-rich food for a lifetime. Over the years, Petcurean has blossomed into a successful natural pet food company yet they still remain independently owned and they follow the strictest standards for quality and safety with each of their pet food products. Petcurean offers their customers what they call the “Petcurean Difference” which guarantees premium ingredients sources from a trusted network of suppliers, scientifically formulated recipes with input from pet nutrition experts, and a pet-centered attitude in all things from recipe development to production and manufacture.

Go! Natural Cat Food Recalls 2021

The Go! line of natural cat foods is formulated and produced in the Petcurean Pet Nutrition Company’s company-owned manufacturing plants located in the U.S. and Canada. Even with their commitment to quality and safety, the Go! line of Petcurean products has been affected by one recall. In November 2003, the Petcurean company voluntarily recalled all of its pet food products that were manufactured at its plant in Texas due to reports of liver disease and liver failure.

It is interesting to note, however, that when the FDA completed an in-depth study of the recalled products they were unable to determine the “definitive cause of the ill effects of the dogs and cats”. The FDA did, however, identify the presence of BHA (a preservative) that is approved for use in pet foods but was not included on the list of ingredients for the Go! line of products. Again, scientists were unable to determine whether the BHA was the definitive cause of deaths. A class-action law suit was filed against the company but was thrown out of court due to insufficient evidence.

Overall Go! Natural Cat Food Review

The Go! line of cat food products from the Petcurean Pet Nutrition Company is one of three product lines this company has to offer. The Petcurean website states that their company is fiercely devoted to remaining independently owned and operated to ensure the quality and safety of their products. Additionally, Petcurean promises that they use only premium-quality, market-fresh meats as well as fresh veggies, fruits, and berries in all of their recipes. Their formulas are designed with the expert input of their in-house animal nutritionist and their ingredients are carefully selected and sourced from independent suppliers. Not only is Petcurean dedicated to quality, but they have a commitment to sustainability as well by producing responsibly, reducing consumption, and empowering people.

According to the Petcurean website, the Go! brand of cat food offers “solutions for your pet’s unique dietary needs”. This line of products is ideal for picky eaters, for cats with dull or dry coats, and for cats with food allergies or sensitivities. Petcurean recognizes that a premium-quality pet food product can be the solution to these and other common issues. All of the recipes included in the Go! line of products are made with nutrient-packed ingredients without growth hormones, by-products, or artificial preservatives. They are complete and balanced for cats in all life stages, plus they help to provide whole body preventive care for your cat as well. The Go! line of products includes four dry food recipes as well as seven wet food options.

Within the Go! line of natural pet food products there are three formulas. The Fit + Free formula is high-protein, gluten-free and grain-free. This formula features premium-quality meat proteins as the first six ingredients in a recipe that is meat-rich, low-carb, and nutritionally balanced. These recipes are designed to help cats achieve and maintain a healthy bodyweight with plenty of lean muscle mass. The Sensitivity + Shine formula is designed for cats with food sensitivities or specific dietary needs. These recipes are carefully prepared with select meat proteins, essential omega oils, and unique carbs. The Daily Defense formula provides whole body preventive care for life with a selection of nutrient-packed and nutritionist-recommended recipes made with premium-quality meat proteins, antioxidant-rich veggies and fruits, and essential omega oils.

Individual Recipe Review (Dry) Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck Formula

This Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck formula is made with premium-quality meat proteins as well as fresh fruits and veggies plus omega oils. This recipe is designed to be a protein-rich, low-carb diet to help your cat remain healthy, strong, and bit. It is supplemented with prebiotics and probiotics for healthy digestion as well as added taurine for heart and eye health. This formula features both DHA and EPA for brain and eye development as well as plenty of omega oils for healthy skin and coat. This formula contains antioxidants for boosted immunity and it is naturally gluten-free and made without any by-product meals, growth hormones, or artificial preservatives.

The website states that Petcurean uses the highest quality, healthiest, least processed and most flavorful ingredients available. The first ingredient in this Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck formula is chicken meal followed by deboned chicken, deboned turkey, duck meal, turkey meal, salmon meal, and deboned trout. With seven of the first ten ingredients being quality sources of animal protein, it is obvious that this recipe lives up to its high-protein claims. The fact that chicken meal is listed as the first ingredient over deboned chicken is also very telling. Fresh meats like deboned chicken contain up to 80% moisture by volume and once the total product is cooked, the moisture level is reduced to 10% which means that the volume of this ingredient is likely to be much lower after cooking than before. Chicken meal is chicken that has already been cooked to remove moisture and it is a highly concentrated source of animal protein. The use of chicken meal as the first ingredient (with the addition of three other meat meals) means that this recipe is very high in protein indeed.

After these primary sources of protein comes chicken fat. While this may not sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is actually a valuable addition to cat foods because it is loaded with essential fatty acids and animal-based fats are more biologically valuable than plant-based fats. In addition to the chicken fat, this recipe also includes salmon oil to help balance out the omega fatty acid ratio. The fresh meats also contain some fat, as does the cottage cheese. All together, these fats help to provide your cat with concentrated natural energy while also supporting the health and condition of his skin and coat.

In terms of carbohydrates, this Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck formula contains peas, potatoes, potato flour, tapioca, lentils, and sweet potatoes. All of these carbohydrates are naturally gluten-free and grain-free which means that they are unlikely to trigger food allergies or sensitivities in your cat. In addition to containing dietary fiber, the peas and lentils also add some supplementary protein, though it is plant protein and therefore less biologically valuable than meat proteins. The fresh fruits and vegetables included in this recipe provide some additional fiber but they are primarily included as natural sources for essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

At the end of the ingredients list for this recipe you will find a number of useful supplements. Dried fermentation products are included as probiotics to help support your cat’s healthy digestion. According to the guaranteed analysis for this product, these beneficial microorganisms are present at a minimum rate of 90,000 CFU/lb. and they come from two strains, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Enterococcus faecium. After the probiotics comes an assortment of vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin D3, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C, among others. Most of the mineral supplements used in this recipe are chelated minerals. Chelated minerals have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your cat’s body to digest and absorb.

Overall, this Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 46%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 18%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 1.5%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Magnesium (Max) – 0.09%
  • Taurine (Min) – 0.21%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 3.1%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.3%
  • Calorie Content – 473 kcal/cup

This formula meets the AAFCO nutritional requirements for cats in all life stages. According to the feeding instructions on the website, this Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck formula contains 473 calories per cup which is fairly high for a commercial dry cat food. This is likely due to the high fat and protein content of the recipe – both of these values are higher than you will see on the label for most commercial cat foods. According to the website’s feeding recommendations, active cats weighing between 7 and 10 pounds should be offered 3/8 to ½ cup of this food daily. It is important to remember that this product has fairly high calorie and fat content so you need to carefully monitor your cat’s weight and body condition while feeding him this food. If your cat gains too much weight you should scale back on his daily portion – if he loses weight or becomes lethargic, you may need to increase his portion a little bit. You can also use this recipe for kittens but it is recommended that you feed kittens freely or double the feeding recommendation to make sure they get the calories and the nutrients they need to grow. You can always consult your veterinarian if you are concerned about your cat’s weight or you want to know how much to feed him.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this Go! Fit + Free Grain-Free Chicken, Turkey & Duck formula appears to offer excellent quality and very good nutritional value. It is rare to see a commercial dry cat food with a protein content above 35%, let alone one as high as 46% – the 18% crude fat minimum is also highly valuable. With no less than 10 protein sources on the ingredients list for this product you can rest assured that your cat’s needs for quality animal proteins will be met and there are also plenty of animal-based fats to ensure that his needs for essential fatty acids will be covered as well. This recipe is naturally gluten-free and grain-free, made with complex carbohydrates like tapioca and sweet potato with additional nutritional support from fresh fruits and vegetables like pumpkin, apples, carrots, bananas, and berries. It is also a bonus that this recipe is supplemented with probiotics and chelated minerals. All in all, this is a high-quality commercial cat food recipe that is unlikely to trigger food allergies or sensitivities in your cat. It is also ideal for cats that need a high-protein and/or low-carb diet for medical reasons.
