Castor & Pollux Cat Food Review

Overall Castor & Pollux Cat Food Review

Castor & Pollux may be a strange-sounding name for a pet food company but it is a name that has become synonymous with “quality”. In fact, Castor & Pollux has become a leader in the organic and natural pet food industry, offering two different lines of pet food products. The Organix line of pet foods was launched in 2003 as the first and most complete line of organic pet foods. When it comes to cat food products, the Organix line offers a wide assortment of dry food and wet food options. According to the brand website, Castor and Pollux Organix pet foods are made with certified organic ingredients that are grown or raised without the use of chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, artificial preservatives, antibiotics, and growth hormones. Not only is the Organix line of products certified organic, but it is rigorously tested and held to the highest standards for quality and safety.

The Organix line of cat foods from Castor & Pollux complies with USDA National Organic Program regulations and they are loaded with ingredients that provide cats with quality protein and fiber. These recipes are 100% complete and balanced for cats and kittens in all life stages, plus they offer quality nutrition that can’t be beat. The Organix line of products includes one dry food recipe for cats and four canned food options. The dry food recipe, Chicken & Brown Rice, features organic free-range chicken as the primary ingredient along with organic brown rice, organic peas, and organic barley – it also features supplementary protein sources like chicken meal and salmon meal. For canned food, the Organix line offers four recipes: Organic Turkey & Spinach; Turkey & Salmon; Turkey & Seafood; and Turkey, Brown Rice, & Chicken. These recipes are completely free from corn, wheat and soy ingredients and it is supplemented with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat.

In addition to the Organix line of cat food products, Castor & Pollux also offers a grain-free line of Organix cat foods. These products are also certified organic and compliant with USDA National Organic Program regulations – plus, they are loaded with quality animal proteins and grain-free carbohydrates. The Organix Grain-Free line of products offers a larger variety than the original Organix line – it includes three dry food formulas and five wet food options. The three dry food formulas are: Grain-Free Chicken & Potato, Grain-Free Healthy Kitten Recipe, and Grain-Free Healthy Senior Recipe. For wet food, there is the Organic Chicken & Chicken Liver Pate as well as the Grain-Free Organic Turkey Pate. Additionally, there is the Organic Chicken Pate recipe and two recipes for shredded meat in gravy.

The Natural Ultramix line of pet food products was released by Castor & Pollux in 2006. This product line includes an assortment of natural formulas made with quality proteins, healthy carbohydrates, and minimally processed fruits and vegetables. These recipes are completely free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients as well as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. The Natural Ultramix line of products includes both wet food and dry food options but, unfortunately, they only come in dog food formulations.

Individual Recipe Review (Dry) Castor & Pollux Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato Cat Formula

This Castor & Pollux Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato recipe is made with a variety of certified-organic ingredients and it is completely free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients. This recipe is protein-rich and grain-free, designed to help indoor adult cats maintain a healthy weight and a healthy digestive system. The formula is balanced with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support coat and skin health, plus it has added fiber to help control hairballs. This recipe is cooked in small batches in certified organic USA kitchens and it is held to the highest standards for quality and safety.

A quick review of the ingredients list for this Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato recipe reveals a number of quality additions. The first ingredient is organic free-range chicken followed immediately by chicken meal. While fresh chicken is high in protein, it is also high in moisture – fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture which means that once the pet food product is cooked, the actual volume of protein in the kibble will be much lower. This is not a problem for this recipe, however, because chicken meal is the second ingredient. Chicken meal has already been cooked down to a moisture level around 10% which means that it is a highly concentrated source of animal protein.

Not only does this Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato recipe include multiple quality sources of protein, but it is made with grain-free carbohydrates like organic peas, tapioca, lentils, and potatoes. All three of these carbohydrates are complex carbs which means that they will be digested slowly by your cat’s body, preventing a sudden spike in blood sugar levels. This recipe doesn’t include any corn, wheat, or soy ingredients and it is completely grain-free as well. It does, however, include two plant-based proteins – potato protein and pea protein. Plant-based proteins are less biologically valuable for cats than animal-based proteins and they are generally used to increase the protein content of a pet food product without adding more meat. It is possible that these ingredients do add to the protein content of the food but the fact that this recipe lists chicken and chicken meal as the top two ingredients means that most of the protein content probably comes from animal sources.

In addition to quality proteins and grain-free carbohydrates, this Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato recipe also includes several sources of fat. Chicken fat is the primary source of fat and while it may not sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is a quality addition to cat food products. Not only is chicken fat an animal-based fat but it is a highly concentrated source of energy for cats. Organic sunflower meal and organic flaxseed also provide some fats in this recipe but they are also likely included for their fiber content. Powdered cellulose is another source of fiber that may help to reduce the formation of hairballs in your cat.

The remaining ingredients on the list for this Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato recipe include organic chicken liver, an assortment of vitamin and mineral supplements, dried cranberries, and dried fermentation products. Chicken liver is highly nutritious as a source of protein and essential nutrients. The vitamin and mineral supplements included in this recipe help to ensure complete and balanced nutrition, though it would be better to see chelated minerals used here – chelated minerals are bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your cat’s body to digest and absorb. Dried fermentation products act as probiotics which helps to support healthy digestion in cats.

Overall, this Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 34%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 13%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 3.5%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1.00%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.80%
  • Vitamin E (Min) – 100 IU/kg
  • Taurine (Min) – 0.20%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 3.0%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.35%
  • Calorie Content – 395 kcal/cup

This formula meets the AAFCO nutritional requirements for cats in all life stages. According to the feeding guide, cats weighing between 7 and 10 pounds should receive between ½ and 2/3 cups daily. Castor & Pollux advocates for feeding cats a combination of dry food and canned food whenever possible to help increase the moisture content of your cat’s diet. When fed in combination, Castor & Pollux recommends 1/3 cup of dry food with 3 ounces of canned food daily for cats weighing 7 to 10 pounds. Keep in mind that these are feeding recommendations – you should still keep an eye on your cat’s weight and condition. If he appears to be gaining too much weight you may need to reduce his daily portion. If he loses weight or appears to be lethargic you may need to increase his ration. If you are switching your cat to a Castor & Pollux recipe from another brand, make sure to transition your cat slowly over a period of 7 days or so to avoid digestive upset.

Final Thoughts

All in all, this Castor & Pollux Organix Grain-Free Chicken and Potato recipe appears to provide high-quality, balanced nutrition for cats in all life stages. The fact that chicken and chicken meal are the top two ingredients speaks to the high protein content of this recipe and there is also a quality source of animal-based fat in the chicken fat. It is a little troubling to see so many carbohydrates used and it would be better to see an additional source of animal protein instead of the planted-based proteins used in this recipe. This formula does include vitamin and mineral supplements as well as probiotics, but it would be better to see chelated minerals used here. Overall, however, this recipe is made with quality natural ingredients and it will provide your cat with high-quality nutrition.
