Best Non-Tracking Cat Litter : Top 4 Litters That Don’t Stick

Let’s get one thing straight: you won’t find a cat litter that doesn’t track 100% of the time. However, you can find litters on the market that perform better than others when it comes to dust and tracking, and usually at reasonable prices. If you’re shopping for the best non-tracking cat litter available today, you’ve come to the right place.

Read on to learn more about how you can find a cat litter that minimizes the problems and hassle associated with tracking around your home, and some of the key factors you should keep in mind when you are shopping around, including brand name, material types, granule shape and size, and the debate around clumping and non-clumping products.

We’ll also recommend several products that meet these standards and that offer crucial benefits over competing products on the market.

How to Find a Cat Litter That Doesn’t Track

We’ve all encounter this problem before – those of us who’ve owned cats know that they always track their litter after they do their kitty business. The reality of physics means that some litter will always stick to your furry pal’s paws no matter what you do to mitigate the issue.

But, there’s good news, too: some litters are more effective than others at preventing your fluffy feline from scattering litter to the four corners of your home. Here’s what you should look for in a cat litter that doesn’t track:

  • High-quality materials: The right materials can go a long way toward minimizing the possibility of tracking and sticking throughout your home. We’ll look at a few different types of materials, so you can make an informed decision.
  • The shape and size of the granules: The shape and size of the granules used in the litter can determine if the litter will be more likely to stick to felines. Larger granules tend not to stick as easily to paws, making your life easier when it comes to clean up around the home.
  • Clumping vs. non-clumping: Clumping litters may track more. After all, if their job – sticking to each other – means that they stick to everything that touches waste, then they may be more likely to stick to your cat.
  • Brand: Some brands just make better litter than others. It’s key to look at the brand name in question and see if they have developed a reputation for quality and cleanliness. Customer reviews often provide a good insight into a brand – if you notice similar comments across a wide variety of products from the same company, then you may have identified a brand that conforms to a set of standards (or lack thereof in some cases).

High Quality Materials

Beyond clay, you’ll find a variety of materials used in the production of cat litter, including – among others – walnuts, corn, and even wood. These less-conventional materials offer many benefits when it comes to tracking, as they may be less likely to stick to your cat’s paws. However, you’ll want to make sure that the material you’ve chosen still provides the type of odor control and clumping behavior you’re seeking. Here’s what you should know about these alternative materials:

  • Walnuts – an unusual material for litter product – offer many advantages, including odor and absorption control. Cats with allergies may also prefer walnut-based litters.
  • Grass offers a few benefits in the dust department, but may cause additional tracking issues depending on the design of certain litter boxes.
  • Litters based on pine wood fibers offer a natural alternative to clay that can eliminate feline allergic reactions to the artificial ingredients used in clay-based litters.
  • Have you ever heard of litter made from corn? You might want to consider it, especially if you’re looking for a litter that doesn’t track as easily as clay-based variants. The larger granules used in certain types of corn litters tend not to stick to kitties as easily as small clumping granules like those found in clay-based products.

Granule Shape and Size

The size of the granules often makes a big difference with respect to sticking. Larger granules aren’t as likely to stick to kitties – and they’re much more likely to notice large granules poking them as they walk out of the box. Additionally, if you make use of a litter box mat to hopefully grab stray pellets still attached to your feline friend, the larger granules won’t be as likely to tag along for the ride.

Another factor that contributes to sticking is the shape of the granule itself. Certain types of litters have a shape that makes them less likely to get “hooked” by fur and the crevices in paws. It’s difficult to predict whether a litter will cause this type of sticking behavior, so you’ll want to choose brands that have a reputation for not tracking quite so easily.

Clumping vs. Non-Clumping

The question around clumping may not be as relevant to the conversation when it comes to tracking as much as material and brand quality. In general, both clumping and non-clumping cat litters may be tracked, although clumping litters in some cases may be more likely to track since their whole purpose is to bond together with other granules.

Brand

The most important question you should ask if you’re on the market for a non-tracking cat litter focuses on brand. Brand means everything in this business – certain manufacturers will cut corners if it means an extra few cents of profit on their bottom lines. For those of us who are on the market for quality litters that don’t track around our homes, we should look closely at brand reputation. The following brands have all proven themselves trustworthy in this respect:

  • Feline Pine: The creators of pine-based cat litter. Pine litters offer many benefits over clay when it comes to tracking incidents.
  • Arm & Hammer: A household name in many industries, Arm & Hammer delivers quality products at great prices.
  • World’s Best: The lineup of corn-based litters World’s Best offers win accolades for their non-tracking capabilities and all-natural ingredient list. Corn offers an excellent alternative to clay and other types of materials.
  • Blue Buffalo: Blue Buffalo has long been regarded as the premier natural pet care brand in the industry, including food and litters. You can trust Blue Buffalo.

Of course, brands can have defective products and faulty units that don’t work as advertised. But by looking at the brand name, you can usually derive a pretty good impression of whether or not that litter was manufactured to certain quality standards.

Feline Pine Original Cat Litter

Feline Pine Original Cat Litter

The first product we wanted to look at, Feline Pine Original Cat Litter, uses pine wood granules as the base for the litter. Because of its wood base, this litter tends not to create the same tracking and cleanliness issues that clay-based litters produce.

No chemicals, additives, or artificial fragrances have any role to play in the manufacturing process, meaning that cat owners with felines that suffer from allergies can rest easy knowing that their furry friend will not have a sneezing fit as soon as they step into our out of the box.

Additional benefits include non-clumping behavior for cat owners who don’t like clumping litters and improved odor control due to a proprietary natural formula. – Buy It

Pros:

  • With a pine fiber formula, this litter tends to do a better job of absorbing ammonia odors and other unpleasant smells that tend to emanate from litter boxes.
  • However, this pine material base doesn’t incorporate artificial ingredients and other synthetic additives that more conventional litters use.
  • Dust shouldn’t be an issue for most homes thanks to a non-clumping, no-dust-allowed formulation due to a lack of clay-based ingredients and other byproducts of the manufacturing process.

Cons:

  • Some cats may take their time in getting used to pine granules as opposed to clay granules. You can mitigate this type of behavior by gradually incorporating the new litter into their box so they have a transition period.
  • Some cats may just not like the texture of pine granules – and that’s ok!
  • If you prefer clumping cat litter, you may want to consider the clumping version of this product.

Arm & Hammer Litter Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Litter

Arm & Hammer Litter Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Litter

You may be wondering why we included a clay-based litter on this. The answer is simple: Brand matters more than material in some cases. Arm & Hammer is a well-respected brand with a reputation for delivering quality, non-tracking cat litters at very reasonable prices.

This litter offers several benefits with a formula designed specifically to reduce tracking incidents throughout the home. Additionally, the company touts the benefits of its “7-day odor free home” guarantee, indicating that the product was designed specifically for this purpose. – Buy It

Pros:

  • These granules use moisture-activation technology to eliminate ammonia smells and form tight clumps for easy cleaning. Cat owners who want an easy cleaning experience may prefer this type of clumping litter.
  • The microparticles used in the production of Arm & Hammer litters means that the litter itself is less abrasive to paws and easier to clean – a great combination.
  • A low-dust formulation keeps your home as dust-free as possible – remarkable for a clay-based litter.
  • A low-tracking formula works to ensure that the litter stays where it’s supposed to stay: in the litter box.

Cons:

  • Odors were reported in some cases, although this appears to be isolated among a few defective units.

  1. The problem with the corn based kitty litter is it supports the production of GMO corn. I will NOT support Monsanto’s evil programs!
The problem with the walnut shell litter is that over production of nut trees to meet the consumer demand is destroying habitat for a large number of marginalized species! This product only increases that demand! Until the growers get it together and stop destroying habitat in the name of greed, I won’t be supporting any nut products!
